CHAPTER 20

At two-thirty that afternoon, I was in the dining room helping Harper clear tables and start prep work for the following day. As I walked toward a table near the front windows, I spotted a man sitting alone with a cup of coffee, a slice of pie and a stack of magazines.

It was Lloyd Cabot, one of the possible sources that Blanche had mentioned during our conversation about Archie Voight. He was wearing a bright blue golf visor bearing the logo of Crescent Creek First National. His son was president of the bank, so the branded swag made me smile.

“Excuse me, Mr. Cabot,” I said, approaching his table. “Can I interrupt you for a couple of minutes?”

He looked up from his reading material, blinked a few times and then offered a gap-toothed grin. “How’re you doing, Katie?”

“I’m great, thanks. How’s the pie?”

He reached down and patted his ample stomach. “Best medicine in the world! I stubbed my toe this morning, and I’m counting on this slice of peach perfection to make it all better.”

I laughed at his wisecrack before offering to send him home with a complimentary slice for later.

“My wife wouldn’t like that,” he said. “She keeps harping on me to drop ten pounds, but I like dessert too much. Besides, if life’s as short as everyone tells me, why skip a little blissful indulgence?”

“You won’t get an argument from me on that point.” I checked his coffee. “Would you like me to warm that up for you?”

He covered the half-filled cup with one hand. “I’m good, but thank you. Dorothy’s also yipping at me about the caffeine. I love the woman, but she’s on a new health kick every other day.”

“Because she loves you, too,” I said. “She was in for breakfast with a couple of her friends last week. She was bragging about how well you’re doing on your diet.”

He cringed. “Please don’t tell her that I was here today. She thinks that I’m at the drug store and post office.”

“Your secret’s safe with me,” I said with a wink. “And before I get back to work, could I ask you a few questions about the Anchor Bar?”

He snickered. “My long ago glory days?”

“I never got the chance to visit either of those places,” I said. “But my folks told me stories about both.”

“I remember your parents back then,” he said. “Audrey and Darren made a good-looking couple.”

“Well, they both still look pretty darn good for their sixties,” I said.

He scoffed. “That’s nothing. Wait until they’re my age. I’ll be seventy-three next month.”

“And you’re looking great!” I told him. “All of Dorothy’s TLC is working for you.”

“Don’t you mean all of her nagging?”

“Whatever it’s called,” I replied, “you really do look good, Lloyd.”

“Pshaw,” he said. “Now what did you want to know about my illustrious career?”

“I was actually wondering if you remember seeing Archie Voight in the Anchor with his buddies. I’ve heard that he was a regular in those days.”

Lloyd nodded, cupping his chin with one hand.
